How to Extract Pages from a PDF Free

Practical guide from StampAPDF · Updated for the current free tools on this site · How we write guides

To extract pages from a PDF free: open the Split PDF tool, select the document, type the page numbers or ranges you need, and download a new file that contains only those pages. The original stays intact on your device, and the extract is built in your browser — nothing is uploaded for processing.

This is the right move when someone asks for "just the signature page," "appendix B only," or "pages 4–6 of the statement."

Extract vs delete vs redact

  • Extract copies chosen pages into a new file. Use it to share a subset.
  • Delete pages (in a full editor) removes them from a working copy. Extract-everything-except is the no-upload equivalent when you only have a split tool: list the pages you want to keep.
  • Redact hides sensitive text that must not be readable. Extracting a page that still contains secrets is not redaction — the secrets remain in the extract.

Everyday extract recipes

One page for a form upload

Portals often accept a single PDF page for a certificate or ID side. Enter that page number alone, download, and upload the extract — not the whole pack.

A chapter from a long report

If the table of contents says chapter 3 starts on printed page 24, confirm the PDF viewer's page index (covers and front matter shift numbers), then extract the range for that chapter only.

Build a custom bundle

Extract the pages you need from each source file, then merge the extracts in the order the recipient listed. Full walkthrough: how to merge PDFs.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the PDF in any viewer and write down the page numbers you need using the viewer's page indicator — not only the number printed on the paper style footer if they disagree.
  2. Go to Split PDF and select the file.
  3. Enter the range. Examples:
    • 1 — cover only
    • 12-18 — a section
    • 1,2,15 — cover, summary, and a chart
  4. Download and open the extract. Check that the first and last pages match what you intended.
  5. Name the file for the recipient (acme-contract-signature-page.pdf) before you attach it.

After you extract

  • Add page numbers if the extract will be reviewed on its own.
  • Watermark DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL if the subset is still sensitive in isolation.
  • Convert a single extracted page to an image with PDF to JPG when the channel wants a picture.

Privacy

Extracts of bank statements and contracts are still sensitive. Prefer tools that never upload the parent file. StampAPDF performs extraction locally; read how to verify PDF tool safety before you use an unfamiliar site.

Frequently asked questions

Is extracting pages different from splitting a PDF?

In practice they use the same idea: build a new PDF that contains only some of the original pages. People say “extract” when they want a subset; they say “split” when they also mean breaking a file into many parts. StampAPDF’s Split tool handles both.

Can I extract pages out of order?

Yes. Enter pages in the order you want them in the new file — for example 5,1,3 — if you need a custom packet without a separate merge step.

Will extract remove the pages from the original?

No. You download a new file. The original on disk is unchanged unless you delete it yourself.

Can I extract a page as an image instead of a PDF?

Extract the page as a one-page PDF, then convert it with the PDF to JPG tool. That path keeps quality higher than photographing the screen.
