Desktop PDF readers often have a rotate button that only changes what you see. Close the tab, email the same file, or open it on a phone and the page is sideways again. A permanent rotate rewrites the page orientation in a new PDF so every app and printer agrees.

Step-by-step

1. Open the Rotate PDF tool and select your file.
2. Choose the angle:
   • 90° clockwise — the most common fix for scans that lean right
   • 90° counter-clockwise — the opposite lean
   • 180° — upside-down pages
3. Apply to all pages when the whole file is wrong, or enter a range when only some pages need fixing.
4. Download and open the result. Check the first page, a middle page, and the last page — mixed-orientation scans sometimes hide a second problem later in the file.

Phone scan workflow that avoids sideways pages

1. Photograph the document from directly above, edges parallel to the frame.
2. Convert photos with the JPG to PDF tool if you started from images.
3. If a page still lands wrong, rotate that range before you merge it into a larger packet.
4. Add page numbers only after orientation is fixed, so numbers sit on the final upright pages.

Mixed portrait and landscape documents

Reports often include a wide table or diagram. Rotating the whole file to fix one landscape page makes the rest of the document sideways. Instead:

• Note the page numbers of the landscape sheets in your PDF viewer.
• Rotate only that range 90° so those pages read correctly when the reader turns the device — or leave them landscape if your recipient prefers wide pages.
• Decide based on how the file will be read: on screen, landscape pages in a portrait deck are normal; for print-and-staple packs, consistent portrait often wins.

After rotating

• Stamping or signing: place marks on the upright pages so signatures land on the signature line, not beside it. Use Stamp & Sign after rotation.
